CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Rick Sanchez
Age: 80
Canon: Rick and Morty
Canon Point: After 2.03, Auto Erotic Assimilation, and his suicide attempt.
Character Information: Rick on the wiki, as well as the episode list detailing each adventure Rick goes on.

Personality: Rick is, to start off with, not a pleasant guy. Rather the opposite, in fact; he's a total dick. Why he is is more of a mystery-- Rick constantly teeters between sociopathic bitter old man to man deeply in pain because of his own intelligence. At the beginning of the series, Rick seems entirely in it for himself: he's living rent-free with his daughter, her husband and two children only because he's lonely and too lazy to find his own place; he takes his grandson on adventures because he's a useful stooge. And to some extent, this is true! He absolutely uses Morty when he can; he throws him under the bus more than a few times (though he always ends up saving him). There's a long flashback sequence where Morty remembers awful things Rick has done to him, and Morty is arguably the one Rick likes the most. At one point, Morty even discovers at least part of the reason Rick keeps him around is because he's so stupid, and Rick so intelligent, that their brainwaves cancel each other out, making Rick impossible to track.

But Rick, for all his assholery, also has a nicer side-- a jerk with a heart of gold (or at least polished bronze). He genuinely loves and adores his daughter Beth, complimenting her and acting quite nice to her consistantly throughout the series. He also loves his grandkids as well, with Morty in particular as his favorite. He works hard to keep Morty with him-- not just because he's useful, but arguably because he enjoys his company (the first two episodes are dedicated to him manipulating the school and Morty's parents so Morty can keep skipping school and going on adventures). He's sacrificed himself for Morty, exchanging his life for his grandson's, at least once (more than once, if you count the comic books). At one point in the series, Rick's left on his own and looks quite bored-- that is, until Morty comes in and suggests they hang out. It's all Rick can do not to leap in joy and agree. He helps beat up a man who broke his granddaughter's heart; he outright kills a man who tried to rape Morty. He might not ever express it, but he does care.

That being said, he's still an asshole! He definitely is to his grandchildren, despite the fact he loves them, and especially to people he doesn't know! Arguably, beyond his family, he's entirely sociopathic in his regards to people: he's shown to be perfectly willing to hurt or kill civilians if it benefits him. At one point, trying to smuggle in some seeds through dimensions, he orders Morty to shoot and kill the guards chasing them. When Morty hesitates, Rick informs him they're simply robots, so it's fine. (They're not. He doesn't care). He outsmarted the Devil and made him suicidal, which just made Rick laugh; he delights in constantly belitting and insulting his son in law, whom he hates. He has a side business inventing and selling specalty weapons to assassins with unusual targets. He doesn't kill for fun, but he certainly doesn't have any qualms about people dying or being killed in the course of his adventures. Mostly he doesn't think about it-- honestly, it's his most dispensed advice to Morty: "Just don't think about it!"

Another point that should be expanded upon is his depression and loneliness. Rick is incredibly lonely, and incredibly depressed. He's very near suicidal, in fact, depending on what day it is and what's happened to him recently. A lot of this depression comes from his supreme intelligence-- he sees the universe as ultimately chaotic and cruel, and so can't live with any kind of hope. His point of view is neatly summed up by Morty in one episode: "[n]obody belongs anywhere, nobody exists on purpose, everybody's going to die. Come watch TV." He's nihilistic and thus lives like a hedonist, looking only to extract the most fun out of his life before he inevitably dies. There's no point in being any other way: he sees life as full of random possibilities, impossible to truly change or improve. So he drinks and does drugs and has sex when he can, enjoying himself to the fullest, because why not? Life sucks. He's tried to commit suicide at least once in canon, and one of his catchphrases really is just an alien way of saying "I am in great pain, please help me."
